Department Spotlight: Umur Amma

by January 17, 2026

1. Mission

The Umur Amma (General Affairs) Department is responsible for the general welfare of members. The department maintains discipline within the Jama’at, provides employment guidance, ensures member security and protection, settles disputes, and maintains records of all members.

2. Day-to-Day Reality

The department manages multiple service areas throughout the community. Career counselling includes maintaining monthly lists of unemployed members, helping them find jobs by sharing their profiles locally, organising sessions for high school students considering university and college, and tracking member-owned businesses and trades.

Health services include sharing preventive care tips and health bulletins via WhatsApp, organising CPR and first aid training every three months at local levels, hosting quarterly health seminars with medical professionals on topics like nutrition and mental health, and running weekly homoeopathic clinics.

The department handles dispute resolution by working with the Islahee Committee at the local level, monitoring ongoing cases in business, finance, domestic, and civil matters, maintaining detailed records of all cases, and reviewing past disputes to improve future handling.

General duties include tracking members involved in inappropriate activities or social media use, providing guidance based on Islamic teachings, monitoring online activity, and coordinating rehabilitation programs for those facing challenges with drugs or crime.

Social welfare work includes monthly family visits, documenting member challenges such as unemployment or educational needs, informing members about available services, checking on those who live alone, and visiting hospitalised members with prayers and support.

Funeral services are arranged promptly when members pass away. The department informs the community, supports bereaved families through procedures, arranges meals, manages paperwork and permissions, and organises transportation to burial sites.

Emergency preparedness involves educating members on the guidance of Khalifatul Masih, ensuring families stock essential supplies, conducting monthly readiness surveys, and arranging bulk purchases of emergency items at discounted rates.

The department also oversees community sports tournaments, ensuring fair play, health protocols, and proper reporting.

3. Collaboration

The department works with Secretary Tarbiyat on dispute resolution, forming joint teams for arbitration. Career counselling sessions for students are organised with Secretary Talim, typically in September and October.

The department collaborates with auxiliary bodies and local office bearers, particularly the Islahee Committee for dispute resolution. For emergency preparedness, the team works closely with the National Emergency Team on education, training, and resources. The General Secretary’s Office helps communicate news of member deaths to the community.

4. Current Focus

Emergency preparedness is a major priority. The department is promoting awareness through announcements, workshops, surveys, and reminders. Local emergency committees are being established at community and regional levels to assess household readiness. The team is developing response protocols and working with the National Emergency Team to enhance member resilience.

Dispute resolution remains central to the work. The department follows a structured process involving local committees, national committees, and formal judicial proceedings when necessary. Cases are carefully monitored and documented to ensure timely resolution.

The department is also addressing cases involving youth engaged in destructive behaviours, coordinating with other teams on rehabilitation and prevention programs.

5. Call to Action

Members should follow the guidance of the Khalifatul Masih (aba) on emergency preparedness and maintain supplies for potential crises. Participation in monthly preparedness surveys helps the department assess community readiness.

Members facing unemployment or other challenges should inform the department so that appropriate support can be provided. Career counselling sessions, health seminars, first aid training, and clinic services are available, and members should take advantage of these resources.

For disputes, members should approach the Sadr Halqa, Local Amir, or Secretary Umur Amma and work cooperatively with the Islahee Committee toward resolution.
