Alhamdulillah, the 42nd Annual Convention of Jalsa Salana Western Canada was held at the Genesis Centre in northeast Calgary on 8 and 9 August 2026. Volunteers finalised logistics through the preceding week, out-of-town guests began arriving on the Friday, and by Saturday morning the largest gathering the community in Western Canada assembles all year was under way.
A tradition rooted in purpose
Jalsa Salana traces its origins to 1891, when the Promised Messiah, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (peace be upon him), first called for an annual gathering built on spiritual enrichment and fraternal unity. In Western Canada the convention has been held since the late 1970s, and more than a century after that first gathering the same purpose continues to animate it: a congregation coming together not merely to meet but to grow, in knowledge, in faith, and in the bonds that tie the community together.
This year’s convention was once again hosted at the Genesis Centre, a venue that has become closely associated with the Jalsa in recent years, a short distance from the Baitun Nur Mosque.
A season of preparation
Attendees experienced two days of programming. The effort to bring the convention to life stretched across many months. Volunteer registration opened well ahead of the event, drawing community members into roles spanning hospitality, security, transportation and guest services, the invisible scaffolding that allows guests to move through a weekend of this size without friction.
A public exhibition for all
A distinctive feature of this year’s convention was “The Awaited Messiah of the Latter Days”, a public exhibition designed to welcome guests of every background. The exhibition offered guided tours, a Dialogue Café for open and respectful conversation, and a dedicated space exploring the guidance of the Holy Qur’an.
The organisers had been explicit in their invitation: everyone was welcome, whether attending as a Jama’at member, a guest, or simply a curious neighbour.
What the programme held
The convention programme ran from Saturday 8 August through Sunday 9 August, with sessions structured around the convention’s founding purposes of spiritual enrichment, community unity, and knowledge and growth. As in past years, the weekend featured keynote addresses, educational sessions, and opportunities for fellowship among attendees from across Western Canada and beyond.
A community ready to welcome
Final logistics fell into place in the days beforehand, volunteer shifts confirmed, signage installed, hospitality stations stocked, and the Jalsa Salana Western Canada committee’s message to the wider Calgary community remained simple: come as you are and come curious. After months of preparation, the doors of the Genesis Centre opened, and Insha’Allah they will open again next year.
